Individual Ceramic Concept

Individual Ceramic Concept #1

When first given the chance to do as I wish with this project, I knew that I wanted to do some type of texture. All my art outside of ceramics deals with a lot of detail and repetition. Carrying forward my personal style I decided to include it in my individual project. My inspiration stemmed from one of my Touch textured project pieces. I liked the texture so much that I wanted to expand on the idea.

Previous Touch inspiration:

This texture was also originally inspired by oceans waves as well and sound waves. To create this piece I first rolled out a huge slab and cut out a thick abstract form as my base to put the texture on and to be the shape of it as a whole. Then  I individually cut hundreds and hundreds of circles and placed them one-at-a-time on the slab side-by-side. This process was time-consuming but the texture and end result was worth it in the end. The glazed I used (Golden Halo) was chosen because I wanted a metallic look and also wanted my piece to look futuristic.

Individual Ceramic Concept #2

My second individual project I wanted to be spontaneous. I knew that I would be producing a lot of ceramic pieces including some that were not made specifically for certain projects. My idea was to combine two completely different pieces into one dynamic work of art. This was my result. I made the pinched-edge bowl-shaped piece first and then throughout the semester I created funky coil piece. I did not make them with the intention that they would become one piece together, rather I chose them both intuitively and randomly to work together like I had planned beforehand in the semester. Although the choice to pair these two together were random, the glazing choices were not. I wanted a similar color palette that would work well together and not clash. The whole idea behind this individual project was to make a work of art without knowing that I had done so: unintentionality.

Dinner Party

Dinner Party

The international student that I was paired with was from Columbia. He emphasized on how diverse the country was not just demographically and culturally, but geographically. He described to me how beautiful the landscape was. One of the most detailed memories was how there would be these enormous, towering mountains and just below them was this beautiful, tropical beach. These vivid memories inspired me to create a geographically abstract, diverse and dynamic ceramic piece that portrayed his memory of Columbia.

My second attempt (The blue is more vivid in person as well as the red and pink flowers not portrayed well in these photos)

Inspiration

Colombian Imagery:

The colors and textures that I used were to portray abstract geographical aspects of Colombian nature. Blue for the mountains. Red and pink for the flowers. Green for the forests, tall grass, and vines. The pale grey-ish blue for the rocks and marine life.

My 5 selected favorites of the 10 textured pieces I made

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To create this texture and form I first used two clay slabs and bonded them together vertically. Next, I fanned-out the top and made a mushroom-like form. Lastly, I used the bottom of a paintbrush and indented a variety of holes to get the texture shown above. I chose this bronze and gold glaze (Copper Adventurine) because I was fascinated by what might happen when used over the texture.

To create this piece I first used two circular slabs to make a hollow sphere. Next, I made individual little clay balls in various sizes and placed them sporadically around the sphere while also leaving some empty spaces to make the piece more interesting. The glaze I used (Brushed Bronze) picked intuitively and randomly for a surprise effect.

This textured piece was made by taking 3 rectangular slabs and pressing them into a mold that had diamond-like indents. Using the textured clay from these press molds, I bonded them together and made this triangle rectangular prism. Although I do not remember the exact glaze that I used, I remember that I did combine about 3 layers of different glazes, including a crystal glaze, so that I could get an explosion-like effect.

To create this piece, I made a single slab and draped it over a water spray bottle to hold its arch shape as it dried. I made the texture by cutting out many little circles and molding them on the surface back-to-back. I used the yellow glaze because I wanted a soft color with this texture that also would not over-power the complex texture.

I made this piece by taking two slabs and pressing them into a mold that had long and skinny oval-like protrusions. Using the slabs, I molded them together, leaving an opening at the top and bottom to create something that could look like a vessel. Next, I indented circular marks in the middle of each oval design with the bottom of a paintbrush. The glaze I used (Peacock) was chosen because I wanted the ceramic to have an antique look.
